Every content marketer should really make it a point to familiarize themselves with the finer details of social networking. Even today, despite the popularity of social media, a lot of content marketers end up making these common social media mistakes:

1. Constantly Trying to Sell on Social Media

We get it, as a content marketer, you’re trying to convince people to convert. However, social networking is primarily about making connections. You want to engage your audience and foster rapport and relationships with them. Your main goal should always be to maintain a connection with your followers so you know you have an audience who will pay attention to what you say online. Minimize promotional posts and focus more on informing and entertaining your audience.

2. Posting Inconsistently

Consistency is key in social media. If you post for 3 days in a row and then disappear for a whole week after that, it will result in less engagement from your followers. If you posted your last post several months back and someone visits your Instagram or Facebook page, they’re going to assume that you don’t update the platforms and your business will lose credibility.

Posting once a day is a good rule of thumb to follow. If this isn’t feasible, then just be sure to post consistently so your followers know when they can look forward to new content.

3. Posting Content Without Value

Whatever you post on your official social media platforms should always tie back to something useful and relevant for your audience. You want to draw people to your social media account and give them reason to look forward to your post. Apart from informing them about your brand or service, you can highlight promotions and giveaways, offer behind the scenes glimpse into how you do business, provide incentives, post teasers, host Q&As, run contests, and post polls.

4. Avoiding Conversation and Discourse Online

Engagement is a big objective for anyone who uses social media. You can’t just post something and ignore it after. You need to like similar posts, share other content, reply to questions, and engage in conversation with your followers. Authentic interactions are a big signifier that customers can trust your brand. It will also help build credibility and visibility for yourself or business.

5. Not Diversifying Posts

Don’t just stick to articles. As a content marketer or author, you might be inclined to share only articles on your social media platforms. But did you know that relevant video content tends to drive more engagement from customers? Infographics and images are also great ways to attract more followers and get higher engagement from your audience.
