What are essential tips for guest post pitch?

I’m going to assume that since you’re familiar with the concept of guest posting and pitching that you’re more or less familiar with its benefits. However, while most writers know what guest posting can do for their business, the challenge really is in getting websites to publish your work.

I would say it all starts with the pitch. You want your pitch to inform, to engage, and more importantly, to impress.

So, how do you write a guest post pitch that does all these? Follow our essential tips below.

1. Identify your objectives for guest posting

You want your work to get published on another website for a reason. Is it to expand your exposure? To tap into their niche audience? To land more clients? Break into a new niche? Whatever it is, spell it out so you move forward focused on achieving that goal.

2. Choose the right sites to pitch

After identifying why you’re writing a guest post, you want to make sure that you’re reaching a relevant audience. Take the time to research who you should send your pitches to. Make sure your objectives are aligned with the website’s niche to get the most out of your efforts.

3. Review the site’s guidelines

Most sites will offer guidelines that potential contributors can follow when they’re writing a pitch. Be sure to carefully read through it and follow the instructions before submitting your pitch.

4. Read through the site’s current posts

One of the best things you can do when pitching to write a guest post is to read through their published posts to align your pitch with the vibe and tone that the site requires.

Aligning your topic or angle to the site’s current voice will make them more likely to pick up your pitch and run your piece. So, take the time to browse through existing material they already have available.

This also helps to ensure that you’re not pitching a topic that has already been published on their site. It also guarantees that you pick a topic relevant to the site’s target audience.

5. Personalize your approach

Simple things like addressing the site’s editor by their name in your pitch can imply that you actually took the time to learn about their guest posting rules and guidelines. It also sends the message that you’re not just sending the same generic pitch to multiple publications.

6. Make it about them

While your guest posting efforts are anchored on achieving business goals, site’s that you’re pitching to won’t really care about that. What they want to hear is how your article can engage their audience. What can your content do for their audience? Will it be relevant for them?

Pitch the benefits of your efforts for their company.

One final thing…

Be brief. Don’t write a long-winded pitch email that details your entire brand history. Introduce yourself, get straight to the point, and explain what your guest post can do for them.
