What is the difference between blogging and digital marketing?

You hear a lot of buzzwords in this industry that, at some point, it becomes hard to really differentiate one concept from another. Given your question, two terms that you probably hear get thrown around a lot, and probably interchangeably, are “blogging” and digital marketing.”

To answer your question, I’d like to differentiate between the two terms by defining both following these specific points:

1. Digital Marketing Is An Overarching Term

Digital marketing is a collective term that refers to marketing efforts conducted through online platforms and technologies. This is a very broad term and can include different marketing efforts ranging from diverse formats such as text, visual content, or any form of information dissemination. The goal is to communicate a set of messages clearly to a very specific target audience.

If I wanted to narrow this down to another phrase that most use interchangeably with the phrase “digital marketing” and “blogging”, I would throw “content marketing” into the mix.

Content marketing falls under the umbrella of digital marketing and refers to any kind of content that can facilitate your marketing goals. These can include videos, infographics, eBooks, webinars, social media, press releases, podcasts, digital ads, and of course, blogs.

2. Blogging Falls Under Content Marketing, Which Is Part of Digital Marketing

As I mentioned earlier, there are numerous tools that we can use to market our brand or service through content marketing. Blogging is one such tool and has been known to see positive ROI, especially for marketers who really make an effort to prioritize blogging.

Additionally, Hubspot notes that companies who publish over 16 blog posts per month on their business blog are likely to get more than 3 times organic traffic versus those who write and publish less.

3. Understanding How Blogging Actually Works As a Content Marketing Strategy Is Key To Using It Effectively

As far as digital marketing strategies go, content marketing is one of the most effective ways a brand or business can raise their online visibility and presence. Remember, we live in a world where people are almost always on some sort of electric device—be it their phones, tablets, or desktops.

Blogging is an important tool under content marketing that works in two ways. One is to help build your credibility and help you stand out amid tough online competition; and second, to help you secure better search engine rankings.

To achieve the first goal, blogging has proven to be a cost-effective method that’s based on your ability to provide your target audience with information that is relevant to their needs. The important thing to remember is that you have to deliver real value through your blogs by writing high-quality content. To rank better on search engines, a more strategic blogging approach anchored on the use of well-researched keywords and phrases to optimize your content can help you be more visible.

What’s the bottom line?

Digital marketing is the overarching term where content marketing falls under, and blogging is a specific strategy under content marketing that is used to generate very specific marketing results.
